Text from the OMVQ (Quebec order of veterinarians). In Quebec, the law provides that most medications used to treat animals may only be sold by a veterinarian or a pharmacist. Here is why this regulation matters.
Risks to animal health. A prescription must account for the animal’s overall health, weight, history and species. What is good for the dog is not necessarily good for the cat! For example, several anti-flea insecticides are extremely harmful to cats and are among the most common causes of poisoning. Used incorrectly, these products pose a real — even fatal — risk.
Risks to human health. Animal, human and environmental health are closely linked. Medications given to animals (and those poured into aquarium water) pass through the environment and often return to the water we drink. These products must therefore be used judiciously.
Is over-the-counter sale harmless? No. Veterinary consultation and prescription ensure the right medication is given to the right individual, at the right dose, under professional advice — for everyone’s safety.
